A little Juliette, GA Monroe County history for this morning. This also happens to be my favorite place to take a cup of coffee and clear my mind.

Monroe County, Juliette, ca. 1907… This iron bridge stretched across the Ocmulgee River at Juliette, linking the Monroe County side of the community with the area across the river in Jones County. According to the Georgia Archives, the bridge was built around 1907 and may have been constructed by the Juliette Milling Company, whose operations occupied both sides of the river. Dr. W. P. Glover was one of the company’s principal owners at the time.
For its first 35 years, crossing here came at a price—the bridge operated as a toll bridge from 1907 until 1942. Another surviving photograph identifies John Carden as the toll-bridge operator and shows automobiles making their way across, a reminder that this structure served the community during the transition from horse-and-wagon travel to the automobile age.
The Juliette Milling Company became an important local industry, eventually producing products such as Juliette Grits and operating a substantial milling complex beside the river and railroad.
More than a century later, this quiet photograph captures what was once an important gateway across the Ocmulgee—and a crossing where somebody was waiting to collect the toll.
