Today, we recognize and celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and declare freedom for the last remaining enslaved people in the South—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Also known as Emancipation Day or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth honors a pivotal moment in American history and serves as a time to reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equality, justice, and opportunity for all.

Today is a day of remembrance, education, celebration, and recognition of the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans throughout our nation.
