For 250 years, America has often served as that “city upon a hill”—a beacon that has drawn people from every corner of the world seeking freedom, dignity, and the chance to build a better future for their families.
My parents and I are among those people.
Many years ago, we left Vietnam carrying little more than faith, determination, and hope. Like countless immigrants before them, they stepped into the unknown, trusting God to lead them.
As I reflect on their journey, I cannot help but think of the Exodus story.
God delivered His people from Egypt and led them through a wilderness filled with uncertainty, challenges, and waiting. The journey was long, and the destination was often unseen, but God remained faithful every step of the way.
In many ways, immigration carries similar themes. It requires leaving behind what is familiar and stepping into a future that only God can see. There are sacrifices, hardships, and moments of doubt. Yet through it all, God guides His people with His providential hand.
Today, as my parents stand here as American citizens, we recognize that this moment is not simply the result of human effort. It is a testimony to God’s grace.
We thank Him for preserving our family through difficult seasons.
We thank Him for bringing my parents safely to this country.
We thank Him for the freedoms we enjoy.
We thank Him for the churches, communities, neighbors, and friends who have welcomed us along the way.
Most of all, we thank Him because every good gift comes from His hand.
Mom and Dad, your story is one of perseverance, courage, sacrifice, and faith. Your hard work created opportunities for the next generation. Your example taught us the value of integrity, gratitude, and trusting God through life’s uncertainties.
We are proud of you.
We honor you.
And we thank God for you.
As we celebrate tonight, let us remember that our greatest citizenship is ultimately not earthly but heavenly. While we are grateful to be citizens of this great nation, our deepest identity is found in belonging to the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ.
