If you’re questioning your calling, author Diane Paddison identifies two thought patterns that may be sabotaging your thinking.

1) It’s all about you. Your calling isn’t about self-fulfilment; it’s about submission to God’s will for your life. Many people experience satisfaction from exercising their God-given gifts. But it’s a result of being in God’s will, not the goal. To discern God’s will, you must develop your relationship with Him through prayer and Bible study. You must also develop relationships with peers and mentors who will pray for you and speak truth into your life.

2) If it’s uncomfortable, it can’t be your calling. Knowing what you’re meant to be doing is often just the start of a long, demanding journey. Some of the most successful people in history endured overwhelming failure in pursuit of their paths. Moses’ calling didn’t seem all that wonderful to him. His response? ‘Who am I that I should go?’ He questioned God, but God responded, ‘I will be with you.’ Still, Moses continued to question: ‘But what if they don’t believe me?’ Even when God provided him with miraculous signs, they weren’t enough. He came back with, ‘But I’m slow of speech.’ Clearly Moses was called to a task God designed for him – and it didn’t feel good to him.

Moses tried every way he knew to prove to God that He had the wrong man for the job. And when that didn’t work, he asked God to send someone else! (See Exodus 4.) Can you relate? If so, keep this thought in mind: discomfort doesn’t automatically mean you’re on the wrong path. The truth is discomfort usually precedes growth.

The Obstacle is Gone

In the Spirit, I saw people standing before a massive rock wall. It reached the heavens and looked impossible to climb. Confused, they asked each other, “Didn’t God lead us here? How do we move forward?”

They made camp at the base, waiting for God to act. They became settled and comfortable. Then the facade shattered like glass. God removed the obstacle and made a way to move, yet many didn’t notice. They were so used to waiting, sharing stories of past miracles, and building a life around that waiting season. They couldn’t see the obstacle was already gone.

Some of the leaders of the people, strong from their own efforts, were aware that something had shifted. They tried to climb with their upper-body strength alone, but they grew tired quickly. They had trained for the wrong challenge.

But there was a different group. They were light-hearted, childlike, always moving, playing, and staying nimble. These were the ones who saw the narrow way open up. Without fear, they slipped through and moved forward because they were ready, curious, and unburdened.

Application:
Ask yourself, have I become comfortable in a past season? Am I waiting for God to act, when He already has? The obstacle you’ve been praying about might already be gone. This is a season to stay flexible, alert, and willing to move when He says move. Don’t rely on your own strength; walk through the way God has already opened.

Be real

Jesus was rough on Pharisees: ‘People look at you and think you are saints, but beneath the skin you are total frauds’ (Matthew 23:28 MSG). They put on a good front but were devoid of grace, mercy, and compassion. And Jesus called them on it! Because we live in an appearance-focused society, Jesus warns us about the dangers that come from dwelling on the outer life at the cost of developing the inner life. So, how do you keep that from happening?

1) Follow Jesus’ example. He spent His life ministering to the hurting, the forgotten, the lost, and lonely.

2) Keep in mind that even though you’re a Christian, you will still struggle in certain areas, and don’t try to act like you ‘have it all together’.

3) Ask God to reveal behaviour patterns that are appearance oriented instead of heart oriented.

4) Surround yourself with transparent people who encourage you to be real and correct you when you need it.

Marybeth Whalen writes: ‘The painters painted the wall leading downstairs…A week later I discovered, while the wall had been repainted, the habits hadn’t changed. The kids were still dragging their dirty hands behind them, making what was white and clean, grey, and dirty. Like that wall, if I’m not careful I can cover up what’s there…wear the Christian tee shirt, carry my Bible, smile like everything’s great, and talk a good game about my walk with the Lord. But deep inside the ugly habits are waiting to be revealed the moment life gets messy. I can become a modern-day Pharisee who focuses on the whitewash and ignores the dirty stuff underneath.’ So, be real.
