A rescue boat circled slowly in a Florida river. 🐋

Wildlife officials had spotted something concerning in the Orange River in Lee County. An injured mother manatee was struggling in the water, and her calf refused to leave her side.

Rescuers from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approached carefully. Manatees are extremely sensitive to stress, so the team floated quietly around the pair to avoid frightening them.

Then the moment came.

Officials released a rescue net and lifted both animals onto a vessel together. Keeping mother and calf together is critical because young manatees rely on their mothers for food, protection, and learning survival behaviors.

Manatee rescues are increasingly common across Florida. These slow-moving marine mammals face dangers from boat strikes, fishing gear, cold stress, and declining seagrass habitats.

Each rescue is a race against time.

For wildlife responders, saving even one mother and calf can make a difference for the future of Florida’s iconic “sea cows.”

A South Florida condo association for a 55+ community has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Palm Greens at Villa Del Ray Recreation Association in Delray Beach reported $43.7 million in debt.

Homebuilder Lennar is the largest creditor, with a $25 million claim. The filing follows ongoing lawsuits between Lennar and the association over agreements related to the community’s shared amenities.
