New Jersey E-Bike Law Highlights

Effective early 2026 — major changes for all e-bike riders:

🔹 Classification & Regulation
All e-bikes — including pedal-assist and throttle models — are now legally treated as motorized bicycles under state law.

🔹 Licensing
Riders must have a motorized bicycle license from the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission OR a regular valid NJ driver’s license to operate an e-bike.

Minimum age to obtain a motorized bicycle license is 15.

Riders 17+ with a standard driver’s license are exempt from the special license.

🔹 Registration & Insurance
E-bikes must be registered with the state and carry liability insurance, similar to motor vehicles.

🔹 Age Restrictions
Riders under 15 are prohibited from operating e-bikes on public roads.

🔹 Grace Period & Fees
Riders generally have six months to meet the new requirements. Initial licensing and registration fees are waived for the first year.

This law fundamentally shifts how e-bikes are treated in NJ — bringing them closer to motor vehicles in terms of licensing, registration, and insurance requirements.

The Fort Lee Bridgemen have done it — breaking a school record set in 1933 by defeating Ridgefield Park and finishing the season undefeated at 9-0! Final score was 27-25
