SO A HOSPITAL IS COMING TO LAKE WYLIE...
For years, one of the things we have repeatedly heard from residents is that Lake Wylie and western York County need more healthcare options closer to home.
Now a hospital is actually coming.
And, almost immediately, some people don’t like the location. Others don’t like which hospital system is building it.
That brings up an important part of community growth that we probably don’t talk about enough.
We can absolutely have opinions about development. We should ask questions. We should pay attention to traffic, infrastructure, emergency access, surrounding neighborhoods and how a project fits into the community.
But sometimes we also have to recognize how these decisions actually get made.
A hospital system is going to look at population growth, demand for services, available land, road access, utilities, financing and whether a project makes sense for its long-term plans.
Local government may have a role through zoning, permits, infrastructure and other approvals depending on the property and project.
But citizens generally do not get to choose which private hospital system purchases property, exactly where it decides to build, or which company decides to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in our community.
And sometimes we may simply have to appreciate the bigger picture.
Western York County is growing.
Residents have asked for better access to healthcare.
A hospital is coming closer to the people who live here.
That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t raise legitimate concerns about the location or ask questions about what services will actually be offered.
But there is also something to be said for being thankful when something the community has asked for finally becomes reality, even if every detail isn’t exactly how every person would have designed it.
Community growth is rarely perfect.
