"At 69, I sold my house and set off to travel around the world despite my children's objections. In Australia, a man invited me into his home for coffee, but the moment I stepped into his living room, I froze.
I had spent my entire life looking after everyone else.
I raised four children, worked, babysat my grandchildren, and lent money whenever someone needed help.
The strange thing was that my children hardly ever did anything for me in return.
They called whenever they needed a babysitter, money, or some kind of favor, but rarely called simply to ask how I was doing.
After my husband, Theodore, died twelve years ago, it took me years to figure out who I was again.
Then one morning, I realized I was sixty-nine years old and had spent my entire life waiting for “someday” to finally arrive.
So I sold my house and booked a trip around the world.
My children were furious.
“You're being selfish, Mom,” Brenda said.
“What about the grandkids?” Jocelyn asked.
Mitchell added, “You're seriously going to waste all that money on traveling?”
Douglas even snapped, “That house was supposed to stay in the family.”
When I refused to reconsider, Brenda and Mitchell blocked my number.
That hurt more than I ever admitted.
But as long as I could still walk, explore new places, and carry my own suitcase, I wanted to do something for myself for once.
Australia was my fourth stop.
That's where I met Bartholomew.
He was seventy-one, widowed, gentle, funny, and loved many of the same things I did, including old movies, jazz, gardening, and detective novels.
After we'd spent several afternoons together, he invited me to his home.
“I've got an entire shelf of old records you'd love. Come over for coffee, and I'll show you.”
I trusted him.
His house felt warm and ordinary, with family photographs lining the hallway.
“I'll put the kettle on,” he said.
He told me to make myself comfortable, so I walked into the living room.
And froze.
My hands immediately began to shake.
Because hanging above Bartholomew's fireplace was something I knew I had seen before.
Something that had absolutely no reason to be in Australia.
