Happy Gopher Tortoise Day!

Today is dedicated to Florida’s only native tortoise. Individuals and organizations across Florida play an important role in helping us achieve our mission to conserve tortoises and the over 350 species that call their burrows home. Gopher Tortoise Day is about celebrating their efforts too!

Here are a few ways you can also get involved, right where you are.

🐢 Visit our website to learn about living alongside gopher tortoises.
🐢 Make your yard more gopher tortoise friendly.
🐢 Attend a gopher tortoise appreciation event.
🐢 Volunteer to clean-up at a local park.
🐢 Report gopher tortoise sightings on the FWC website.
🐢 Read a gopher tortoise story or print coloring pages for young conservationists.

Where do snakes hide during storms? Answer:

Gopher Tortoise Burrows!

Just like humans, animals seek refuge from natural disasters! Gopher tortoise burrows can be as long as 15-20 feet and 6-8 feet underground! Snakes and other small animals will create their own shelter inside of the burrow. So essentially, gopher tortoises dig the subway tunnels for all other small animals that can’t fly! Making them one of the most important creatures for our functioning ecosystem! Knowledge is power!

National Invasive Species Awareness Week
DYK there are over 500 nonnative fish and wildlife species documented in Florida? Species that are invasive – such as Burmese pythons, Argentine black and white tegus, and lionfish – can pose threats to native fish and wildlife, human health and safety, or our economy. But we can all do our part to help!

✅ If you have a nonnative pet and can no longer care for it, don’t let it loose! Our Exotic Pet Amnesty Program can help find nonnative pets new homes with qualified adopters, with no fees and no penalties. For more info: http://bit.ly/2Hn8nT5
✅ Report sightings of nonnative wildlife to our Exotic Species Hotline at 888-Ive-Got1 (483-4681), online at IveGot1.org, or by using the free IveGot1 app. Tips for sending a credible report: http://bit.ly/2kJmIAX
