Top 5 Tips to Protect Your Home’s Pipes During a Major Freeze

With temperatures forecast to drop to freezing this weekend, homeowners have a short window to prepare. Taking a few simple steps today and tomorrow can help ensure peace of mind during the freeze—rather than going to bed worrying about burst pipes and costly water damage.

1. Insulate exposed pipes

What to do: Wrap exposed pipes with foam pipe insulation, especially those under the house or in unheated areas. CPVC plastic water lines (off-white or tan in color) are especially prone to bursting during freezes and should be prioritized.

2. Let a small stream of water run

What to do: Turn on both the hot and cold handles of one faucet located farthest from the front of the house or water meter. Allow a very small, steady stream of water to flow. Only one faucet is needed. Moving water is less likely to freeze and helps relieve pressure in the pipes.
