As a real estate professional with 40 years of experience, I’ve seen many unique properties, but this one stands out. I listed this property twice, and each time was a different experience. The first time was in May 2012. We initially had it under agreement, but unfortunately, the buyers were unable to secure financing. I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was bad faith involved in the process. The owners, who are close friends of mine, decided to hold onto the property. Interestingly, one of the real estate shows picked it up during that time, adding some visibility.
The second time we listed it, it sold in just five days—and at full price. This property was truly one of a kind. Dating back to 1833, it had undergone numerous transformations over the years. The first floor had been converted into office space, while the second floor featured two apartments. There was even potential to expand one of the apartments by adding a third floor. But it was the basement that really captivated my imagination. There was a tunnel, and I’ve always believed it once ran beneath the street to connect to a property across the road on the Delaware River. Rumor has it that the property may have played a role in the Underground Railroad. Now, I never ventured into that tunnel myself, but I can’t help but imagine what incredible history it could have been a part of, potentially saving lives during such a dark chapter in history. I can’t say for certain, but the thought has always stayed with me.
