April always brings crazy weather! Here is what to do from some experts to keep your plants safe!
***Here's what you need to know with the upcoming snow and cold temperatures.***
❄️Tuesday Night: They are calling for 2-4 inches of heavy wet snow. We do NOT recommend covering any plants! The snow will accumulate on coverings and cause too much weight on the plants potentially causing further damage. The snow will actually maintain a temperature of 32 to 33 degrees and the moisture in the air from the snow will prevent freeze damage. The snow will also help to insulate the plants.
❄️Wednesday Night: It is forecasted that the snow from Tuesday will mostly all melt during the day on Wednesday. The plants will be left with no protective barrier so we highly recommend covering tender plants Wednesday night!
WHAT PLANTS TO COVER?
-All existing plants will be fine! They may get some slight burn on newly emerging leaves but it is nothing that will be detrimental to the plants.
-Newly planted/purchased plants that were grown in a greenhouse with tender new growth should be covered.
-Tender or sensitive plants such as Japanese Maples should be covered to prevent damage that could last throughout the season. As well as any plant with flowers in order to prevent the flowers from burning and turning brown.
-Vegetables, Herbs, or Annuals would be best protected if brought into a warm area above 50 degrees.
HOW TO COVER THEM?
It is best to cover plants with sheets, drop cloths or blankets. DO NOT cover them with plastic or plastic tarps which can cause even more damage.
Stay warm out there and protect your plants!!!🥶🪴
