Beware of 844-618-3993 calls pretending to be Indiana & Michigan Electric Power. If you call that number, it has a recording and all the prompts of the real I&M but they are not legit. They reached out to a renter on property my brother (now deceased) owns. They want $1650 deposit plus $49.12 late fee for a meter upgrade (supposedly must be paid every 10 years) otherwise they will be disconnected immediately. I asked the girl if she could tell me whose name was on the bill and told me to hold but she actually hung up on me. Smelled like a SCAM to me so I contacted I&M @ 800-311-4634 and said that 844-618-3993 is not one of their numbers and it was a scam. I also contacted the non-emergency number at the police department and they said it was most likely a scam. Scams are trending right now so beware. Always call the "real" companies before giving out your information to these people trying to collect. I also called the scam number again and told them I was having trouble logging in and that I wanted to make a payment. He asked for my account number, I gave him a bogus number, name and address. After a few minutes, he said, "ok, I found it." lol. No way he found it. Asked for $300 and when I told him I knew he was a scammer, the line went dead.
Don't be like my someone I use to know who gave out all of her information to someone saying she owed back taxes and was from the IRS, they wanted payment with gift cards. lol, and she paid them $8000 in gift cards. FYI the IRS will never call you requesting money.
