In Texas, there are significant changes and important information regarding homestead exemptions in 2025. Here's a summary:
Texas may see increased homestead exemption amounts in 2025, but these changes require voter approval in a November 2025 constitutional amendment election and would be retroactive to 2025 tax bills. Proposed increases include the mandatory school district exemption potentially rising to $140,000, and the mandatory school district exemption for those over 65 or with disabilities potentially increasing to $200,000 when combined with the general exemption. The exemption for business personal property may also increase to $125,000.
Key information for 2025 includes an application deadline of April 30, 2025, for those who purchased a home in Texas the previous year. Appraisal districts are required to verify homestead eligibility periodically. Additional exemptions may be available for residents over 65, those with disabilities, and disabled veterans. Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating are eligible for a total property tax exemption on their residence homestead.
