The one thing we all want to do more of — but often lose out to screens and eye-catching short-form videos.

The older I get, the more I enjoy reading with a glass of tequila—or, as we head into the colder months, a pour of bourbon.

One of my favorite words is “ignorant.” Most people misunderstand it. At its core, it simply means lacking knowledge about something. And that’s not a bad thing. I’m ignorant about a lot in this world—but I try to stay curious enough to change that.

I love asking people: “What’s your favorite book or literary work?”

Before seeing this post, you might’ve been ignorant of the story of Theodore Roosevelt and his journey down the Amazon after losing his last election. It’s one of my favorite tales—an adventure full of grit, danger, and resilience.

My goal isn’t to get everyone to read this specific book—or the dozens of others that have moved me—but to share stories that might captivate you the way they captivate me. The kind that make you keep turning pages until your glass holds nothing but ice and your cigar burns to ash.

So take a mental note (or add one to your phone): comment a book that made you feel something.

For me, Candice Millard’s River of Doubt is a fascinating look at one of the last great explorations of the Amazon—an untamed river system never before traversed by Westerners in the early 1900s.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. I’ll be sharing more of my favorite reads soon—quick synopses of stories that challenge me, inspire me, and remind me to slow down and savor this life.

Growing up, one of my favorite movies was "Lonesome Dove." I have fond memories of reenacting scenes from the movie with my older brother, spending countless hours on rocking horses with our toy guns. The film was an adaptation of the book "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry, a literary giant of his time who wrote several other novels that I have yet to read. Mr. McMurtry grew up and lived in Archer City, Texas, where he opened a bookstore in 1986 that housed over 200,000 books at one time! The store was eventually acquired by Chip and Joanna Gaines in 2022.

The Ridgeview Game Ranch sits just outside of Archer City, Texas, with commanding views of the city and surrounding landscape.
