Unlike ordinary fly larvae that feed on dead tissue, New World Screwworm larvae attack living flesh, making them one of the most destructive livestock pests ever to threaten North America.
The USDA APHIS has trained detector dogs, like Vinta, to inspect livestock sale barns and other high-risk locations, helping identify animals that may be carrying this devastating parasite before it has a chance to spread.
Early detection protects animal health, helps safeguard producers, and is one of the most effective tools for preventing outbreaks.

This week, Vinta is sniffing for screwworms all across Texas by looking at sheep, goat, and cattle sale barns and responding to nearby locations with suspicious cases.
