Formerly enslaved Texans built an entire self-sufficient neighborhood in Dallas from scratch, and it's still standing more than 150 years later. 🏘️

The Tenth Street Historic District was established just south of downtown Dallas in the 1880s by formerly enslaved people who purchased land and built homes, churches, and businesses in what became known as a freedman's town, a community founded specifically by and for Black Texans in the years immediately following emancipation. The neighborhood developed its own tight social fabric, with generations of the same families living on the same blocks for decades, and it remains one of the best preserved freedman's towns in the entire country, with many of its original shotgun houses still standing.

Like other historically Black neighborhoods in Texas cities, Tenth Street faced significant threats from highway construction and development pressure in the decades that followed, and preservationists have worked to protect its remaining historic homes from demolition in recent years.
