Welcome back to our weekly deep-dive! This week, we’re scaling the steep slopes of Cleopatra Hill to visit the "Wickedest Town in the West," a vertical masterpiece of mining history and artistic rebirth: Jerome.
Jerome: A Bird's-Eye View of Beauty Perched precariously at 5,000 feet, Jerome is the largest ghost town in America that refused to die. Once a copper-mining titan with a peak population of 15,000 in the 1920s, it nearly vanished in the 1950s before being saved by a community of artists who turned bordellos into galleries and ruins into retreats.
• Unique Feature: A Vertical Labyrinth. Jerome isn't a town you walk through; it’s a town you climb. Built on a 30-degree incline, its narrow streets are interwoven with steep stairways and "level-ish" sidewalks. The views are unmatched, overlooking the Verde Valley, the red rocks of Sedona, and even the San Francisco Peaks in the distance.
• Must-See History: Jerome State Historic Park. Visit the Douglas Mansion, built in 1916 by mining magnate James S. Douglas. It now serves as a museum where you can see massive mining equipment and 3D models of the 88 miles of tunnels that still honeycombed the hill beneath your feet.
• The Fun: This town is a paradox of "spooky and sophisticated." Join a ghost tour at the Jerome Grande Hotel (a former hospital), browse world-class studios at the Jerome Art Center (a repurposed high school), or grab a drink at the Paul & Jerry’s Saloon, one of the oldest in the state. Afterward, head down the hill to the Verde Valley to explore Central Arizona’s burgeoning wine country.

Welcome back to our weekly deep-dive! This week, we’re cruising into a town that is a vibrant canvas of mid-century nostalgia, Wild West legends, and some of the most surreal landscapes on Earth: Holbrook.
Holbrook: A Bird's-Eye View of Beauty Perched on the edge of the Painted Desert, Holbrook offers a front-row seat to a landscape of layered, colorful badlands that stretch from the Navajo Nation to the Grand Canyon. It’s a town where the "Mother Road" (Route 66) still feels very much alive.
• Unique Feature: Wigwam Village #6. For a true dose of Americana, you can’t beat a night in a concrete-and-steel teepee. Built in 1937 along Route 66, these iconic structures (complete with vintage cars parked out front) are a dream for kids and nostalgic adults alike. It’s one of only three such villages remaining in the U.S.
• Must-See History: Petrified Forest & Historic Downtown. Just minutes away lies the Petrified Forest National Park, a bewitching collection of ancient, crystallized logs. Back in town, take a self-guided walking tour to see the Bucket of Blood Saloon and the Blevins House, famous sites of real-life Wild West shootouts and grit.
• The Fun: Holbrook is the ultimate "road trip" hub. Spend your morning hunting for "dinosaur" treasures in local rock shops, your afternoon exploring the eroded beauty of the Painted Desert, and your evening soaking in the neon glow of downtown’s mid-century storefronts.
