Why did we leave California for Tennessee?

It came down to three things: values, lifestyle, and keeping more of what we worked so hard for.

I remember the exact moment. I looked at my husband and said, “We’ve got to go.” That wasn’t impulsive—it was after doing the homework. We looked at multiple states with no income tax so Brian’s retirement could stretch further. And after all that due diligence, Tennessee checked every box.

For Brian, it was simple: land. Space. Freedom to build what he wanted—including that workshop he’d been dreaming about. And here’s what I see now, helping family after family make the same move… it’s usually the same story. People aren’t just relocating—they’re upgrading their entire way of living.

I thought adding carpet to our stairway would be simple.

It wasn’t.

Two rooms. Completely different styles. Totally different colors. Which means whatever goes on the stairs has to somehow tie it all together—or at least not clash with either. Easy in theory… not so much in reality.

So Brian and I made a day of it.

Hit a carpet showroom, looked at a lot of options. And to be clear—I’m not afraid of pattern. If anything, I lean toward it. But there’s a fine line between “this adds character” and “this takes over the entire house.”

Some were too bold.

Some were too boring.

Some the cats would’ve loved… which is not the same thing as a good decision.

Took a break, grabbed Korean BBQ (Brian’s pick—you cook your own food, still not sure how I feel about that), met up with a friend… made a whole day out of it.

Brought samples home.

Looked at them in our actual lighting, with our actual spaces… and yeah—none of them worked.

This is exactly why I always tell clients:

What looks good in a showroom doesn’t always translate to your home. Lighting, surrounding colors, layout—it all changes the decision.

Back to the drawing board.

But better that than making the wrong call and living with it every day.

Under contract in Mount Juliet—and doing the legwork so my clients don’t have to.

They’re out of state, so I showed up to the inspection on their behalf. That’s part of the job—making sure nothing gets missed, even when you can’t be there in person.

And so far… it’s looking good.

The home has been heavily renovated—brand new kitchen, updated bathrooms—and the inspector had a lot of positive feedback. There’s even an in-ground pool that appears to be in great shape.

Now, here’s where experience matters…

The property sits on nearly 2 acres—and yes, there are tombstones on site. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely something that needs to be properly documented and handled the right way. That’s the kind of detail you don’t overlook.

Because a smooth transaction isn’t luck—it’s paying attention to everything.

Honest opinion?

This room has personality—and that’s a good thing.

Not everything has to be neutral, safe, and “perfect.” The color, the bold rug, the mix of pieces… it actually makes the space feel lived in. And let’s be real—if Goosey loves it, that’s already a win 🐾

That said, a few small tweaks could take it from “fun” to really dialed in.

I wouldn’t touch the desk if you actually use it—that matters more than aesthetics. But I would look at adding some greenery (you’re spot on there). A plant stand or a larger floor plant in that corner would soften the space and balance out the bold colors.

You could also test pulling the chair out slightly to open things up and create a more intentional layout. Sometimes it’s not about changing furniture—it’s just about giving everything a little more breathing room.

And the rug clash in the entry? You made the right call. Not every space needs to be filled.

Design isn’t about perfection—it’s about creating a space that works for you.
