25 years ago, the world changed.
I will remember September 11, 2001, for the rest of my life. I was in the Outer Banks on vacation with my wife and six friends.
I remember waking up that morning and standing in the doorway, looking at the TV, trying to understand what had happened. A plane had hit the World Trade Center.
Was it a mistake? Was it an accident? How does something like that even happen?
Then, as I stood there watching, I saw the second plane hit.
At that moment, we knew this was no accident.
We sat there watching the images on TVโthe people running, the fear, the smoke, the devastation and destruction. Then came the reports that another plane had struck the Pentagon, followed by the news that Flight 93 had gone down in a field here in Pennsylvania.
We spent most of that day watching the news, trying to comprehend what was happening to our country. We were in shock and disbelief.
The next day, we went out and bought an American flag and proudly flew it high at the beach. With nearly all civilian flights grounded, I remember watching military aircraft flying up and down the coast. Everything felt different. In many ways, it was.
It is hard to believe that was 25 years ago.
I will never forget where I was that morning. I will never forget the innocent lives that were lost, the families whose lives changed forever, or the first responders who ran toward danger when everyone else was trying to escape.
Today, 25 years later, I still remember.
