Mount Juliet or Murfreesboro? A few more factors worth weighing if you’re relocating to Middle Tennessee.

Terrain — Murfreesboro sits on flatter, rolling land. Mount Juliet has more hills, especially near the lake and out toward Wilson County’s rural areas.

Population — Mount Juliet is the smaller, tighter-knit community, around 46,000 people. Murfreesboro is significantly larger, pushing toward 175,000, with its own university, hospitals, and a broader local job market.

Economy — Murfreesboro is largely self-contained, so more people live and work there. Mount Juliet leans more residential and retail, with a lot of its workforce commuting into Nashville.

Commute — Mount Juliet is closer to Nashville and BNA, which matters if you’re headed downtown or flying often. Murfreesboro is a longer drive into the city but sits right next to MTSU.

Water access — Mount Juliet has the advantage here, sitting between Percy Priest Lake and Old Hickory Lake with easy access to marinas and boat launches. Murfreesboro has the Stones River and greenway trails, more suited to kayaking and fishing than boating.

Budget — Murfreesboro tends to run a little more affordable on average.

Schools — Ratings vary by neighborhood in both cities, so we’d recommend checking specific school zones on Niche.com before you settle on an area.

The “right” choice really comes down to how you want to live day to day.

Every pocket here has its own rhythm — Franklin’s downtown walkability, the acreage out toward Eagleville, the shorter commute into the city if you’re in Berry Hill or Wedgewood-Houston. Fall means Main Street Festival and pumpkin patches out in Arrington. Summer means Nashville traffic on 65 during CMA Fest, so where you land matters more than people think.

That’s the real work — matching the area’s character and your commute to the life you actually want to live, not just the listing price.
