French sugar industrialist, Marshal du Plessis-Praslin (1598-1675), originally inspired the early pralines. At the Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte during the 17th century, du Plessis-Praslin created his first pralines, made with almonds and individually coated in caramelized sugar.

Dating back to the 14th century, "to pink" (the verb) means "to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern." It would have been curious to find pink used in fabric or decor during the Middle Ages. Occasionally it was seen in women's fashion and religious art, however. In the 13th and 14th centuries, artists sometimes portrayed the Christ child dressed in pink, the color associated with the body of Christ.

June 21 is the first day of summer and National Seashell Day reminds us to put our toes in the sand and admire the beauty of seashells. National Seashell Day is here to tell you all sea shellers and make sure you check out your local beaches during the prime shelling season.


To those not in the know, shellers are beachcombers who collect seashells by scouring the beaches for the gems left behind by snails and mollusks. On June 20 each year, National Vanilla Milkshake Day celebrates the cold beverage made with vanilla ice cream, vanilla, and milk.


The frosty vanilla milkshake showed up in print for the first time in 1885. The original concoction consisted of cream, eggs, and whiskey and was often served with other alcoholic tonics such as lemonades and soda waters. By the early 1900s, soda fountains introduced milk-based drinks that were more kid-friendly without the whiskey ingredient.

On June 19 we learn about National Watch Day and recognize an industry that has been around for more than 500 years and still steadily evolving.


The history of watches date back to the 15th and 16th centuries with watches during this time period featuring only the hour hand. It wasn't until the 17th century that minutes and seconds were added to the features of watches. Created initially for women, the design of wrist watches were typically elegant pieces of jewelry and strictly worn by women. Men preferred to carry a pocket watch because of the symbolism of being sophisticated and well-to-do. Wrist watches began to transition towards men during WWI, specifically soldiers, because the pocket watch was an impractical item for those wearing uniforms.
