In this installment of Adventures in Building Inspections: What's Under that Piece of Wood?

During a recent building inspection, what appeared to be a somewhat innocuous piece of plywood on the basement floor turned out to conceal a 20+ foot deep 3'x3' vertical shaft. The plywood was loose and easily removed from atop this death trap. A rusty ladder was also present for those brave enough (cranially challenged?) to venture into this dank den of darkness. The formed concrete walls did not extend entirely to the bottom and the sandy/gravelly soil had either been excavated or washed out so that there appeared to be a fairly sizeable space that extended beyond the sides of the shaft.

Why would someone take the time to do this? Perhaps the intent was to locate a well here (in a basement) and they simply never encountered groundwater (the pipe you see is a driven point that was supplying water to the house). Who knows? All I know is I'm glad I didn't fall in.
