As the housing shortage in California and primarily our city of Fresno worsens 📉, there are solutions! Developing infill lots of vacant or underutilized lots within established neighborhoods, rather than on the outskirts of cities where infrastructure and services are often lacking.

One of the most popular types of infill development is the construction of mini apartment buildings, from 4 unit to 8 units and sometimes more. These buildings provide more housing options and greater density, all while fitting in seamlessly with the existing fabric of a neighborhood. They're often built on average-sized lots that would have only accommodated a single-family home before, meaning more people can now live in the same area.
The benefits of infill development are numerous, combating urban sprawl by building more homes within already established areas. This means more efficient use of existing infrastructure such as roads, public transport, and utility networks.
Infill development is also more environmentally sustainable. By building new homes closer to existing infrastructure, it reduces the need for long car commutes and encourages alternative modes of transportation like biking or walking.

Restrictive zoning laws make it difficult to build infill developments. The city's restrictive zoning laws are hindering the development of much-needed housing, and exacerbating the housing shortage in the city. By loosening up these zoning laws we can create more housing options for our local residents.
By doing so, we can help combat the housing shortage, reduce urban sprawl, and create more environmentally sustainable communities. The housing shortage continues to drive up housing costs for all. Renters and homeowners are both affected.

The longer we wait, the more the city of Fresno falls behind.Together, we can make Fresno a more livable, equitable, and prosperous city. PS. We can build pretty things, not everything has to be cookie cutter and lame.
