Today, Rex and I are thinking about the sacrifices made by so many brave men and women, and the families who carry those memories with them every day.

The 6th Annual Gathering of the Eagles Canoe Journey returns May 16–22, bringing together canoe families, cultural leaders, and island communities for a week of cultural exchange, storytelling, song, dance, prayer circles, traditional foods, and connection across Lopez, San Juan, Shaw, Orcas, and Lummi Islands.

Visitors are welcome to attend these free community gatherings and experience a side of the islands that goes far beyond the usual tourist path.

Saturday morning means a slow walk to Leaven Creperie and Cafe for organic, locally sourced crepes (with gluten-free options). Choose from their sweet or savory options and add a really good espresso to ease into the day. Open Friday - Tuesday from 7:30 am - 3 pm.

By Sunday, you’ve fully settled into island time, which calls for brunch at Madrone Cellars Bar + Kitchen, a 100% gluten-free menu built around Belgian waffles, local ingredients, and a Sparkling Wine Tower that’s hard to say no to. 🥂Brunch is every Sunday from 10 am - 2 pm.
