I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished with one of our local affordable housing organizations since 2020, which has directly contributed to making permanently affordable housing in San Juan County, Washington a reality for many. And I’m particularly honored to learn today that our most recent work, during the course of the last year, has directly served as the impetus behind a recent legislative update to RCW 64.90, the Washington Uniform Common Interest Ownership Act, which clarifies that local governments cannot impose a requirement, such as a binding site plan or hearing examiner proceeding, on a Common Interest Community (CIC) that would not be imposed on a physically identical development under a different form of ownership – see RCW 64.90.025(2) and Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill (ESSB) 5611. While this does not constitute legal advice, we think this is a definite win toward removing barriers to home ownership in Washington state!
