Did you know Juneteenth began in Galveston, Texas?
On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced General Order No. 3, informing Texans that enslaved people were free.
Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two years earlier, it was not fully enforced in Texas until Union troops arrived after the Civil War.
Today, Juneteenth is remembered as a significant day in Texas and American history.
