An archaeological dig will be taking place soon at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park by the City of St. Augustine Archaeology Program!

Here's the news from the Archaeology Department:

We’re breaking out the major equipment to get ready for an upcoming project at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park!

In 1565 when Pedro Menendez and his men arrived in St. Augustine, they settled in the existing Timucua community of Seloy. Though their interactions started on amenable terms, the relationship soon soured. The Spaniards relocated to Anastasia Island for greater protection, but then moved again in 1572 to the present-day location of downtown.

Today, the first landing site and part of the village of Seloy is encompassed by the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park property. Decades of previous archaeological investigations led by Dr. Kathy Deagan from University of Florida's Florida Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian, and the City Archaeology Program have substantially increased our understanding of past communities.

As with all of our projects, our upcoming work is in response to new building and development on the property. The City’s Archaeology Preservation Ordinance affords us the opportunity to document the site before it is disturbed. Despite decades of previous research, the project area has never been tested! We may find evidence of Native American occupation dating back thousands of years, deposits from Mission Nombre De Dios, and maybe even components of the first settlement.
