Applications & Types of Caulking - 08/01/26
What is it? Caulking is a flexible material used to seal gaps and cracks, stop air and water leaks, and prevent bugs from entering your home. Common types include acrylic latex for trim, silicone for wet areas, and polyurethane for concrete.
• Acrylic Latex: Relatively inexpensive, water based for easy cleanup, paintable, great for indoor trim and baseboards.
• 100% Silicone: Waterproof, highly flexible, resists mold, ideal for bathtubs, shower stalls, sinks and kitchens. Silicone caulk is not easily paintable. That is why it is available in a variety of colors or shades. Clear or white are the most common.
• Polyurethane: Extremely durable, flexible, and best for outdoor use. Commonly used to seal concrete cracks.
Basic Application Steps Include:
!) Prep – Remove old caulk and completely clean with a damp cloth. Allow to dry.
2) Cut the Tip – Slice the nozzle tip at a 45-degree angle. Start with a smaller opening, you can always make bigger.
3) Apply – Load the tube into a caulking gun, puncture the inner seal, and pull the gun smoothly along the gap at a steady pace.
4) Smooth – Tool or smooth the bead with a wet finger or smoothing tool.
Most caulking guns have built-in mechanisms to cut the tip and poke a hole in the inner seal. For bigger jobs, consider using a battery-operated caulking gun.
