Most new homeowners make the same mistake in the first 30 days after moving in…
And it can cost them thousands later. Before you start decorating, here’s what actually matters during your first few weeks in a new home.
Everyone wants to decorate right away. I get it.
But before the artwork, furniture deliveries, and paint samples… take care of the things that make the home **safe, secure, and functional first.**
**Week 1: Deep clean while the house is empty**
This is your one chance to clean every surface without furniture in the way.
• Clean carpets
• Wash windows
• Wipe cabinets and drawers
• Consider duct cleaning
It’s faster now and it makes the home truly feel like **yours.**
**Week 2: Handle security**
Even if the seller gave you every key, you still don’t know who made copies over the years.
• Rekey all exterior locks
• Reset garage and smart lock codes
• Test smoke & CO detectors
• Check exterior lighting
Small steps. Big peace of mind.
**Week 3: Learn how your house works**
Don’t wait until an emergency.
• Find the water shut-off
• Locate the breaker panel
• Run the irrigation system
• Check under sinks for leaks
• Test the AC and heat
Also take photos or quick videos of each room and major appliance.
If you ever need an insurance claim, you’ll be glad you did.
**Week 4: Handle the boring admin**
Update your address with the DMV, banks, insurance, and subscriptions.
Set up autopay where it makes sense and add storage where it actually improves daily life.
Then pause.
Live in the house for a bit before making major cosmetic changes.
Paint colors and layouts look very different once you’re settled.
Moving into a new home isn’t about doing everything at once.
It’s about doing the **important things first.**
💾 **Save this so you don’t forget these steps after closing.**
