# 🚨 TAILED TREASURES PSA: Check for Ticks! Protect Yourself and Your Pets 🐾
At Tailed Treasures of MD, our mission is teaching prevention *before* bad things happen. With the warmer weather here, tick season is in full swing. These tiny pests are more than just a nuisance—they are a serious health risk to both you and your four-legged family members.
Taking just a few minutes to check for ticks after spending time outdoors can save you and your pets from severe, long-term illnesses.
# # # 🔬 Why It Matters: The Hidden Dangers
Ticks carry a variety of dangerous pathogens that can be transmitted within hours of attachment.
* **Lyme Disease:** One of the most common tick-borne illnesses. In humans, it can cause chronic fatigue, joint pain, and neurological issues. In dogs, it often presents as shifting lameness, fever, swollen joints, and sudden lethargy.
* **Other Serious Illnesses:** Ticks also transmit **Anaplasmosis**, **Ehrlichiosis**, and **Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever**, all of which can cause severe, rapid illness in both humans and animals.
# # # 👀 What to Look For
**On Yourself & Family:**
* **Size:** Deer ticks can be as tiny as a poppy seed. Don't just look for large bugs—feel for tiny bumps.
* **Symptoms:** Look out for a **"bullseye" rash** (a red ring expanding from the bite site), fever, chills, and body aches. *(Note: Not everyone gets the classic bullseye rash, so always monitor how you feel!)*
**On Your Pets:**
* **Feel for Bumps:** Run your hands firmly over your pet's body, pressing through the fur to the skin.
* **The Tick "Hot Spots":** Ticks love warm, hidden areas. Pay extra attention to:
* In and around the ears
* Under the collar and around the neck
* Under the front legs (armpits) and between the back legs
* Between the toes and all around the tail
# # # 🛑 Found a Tick? What to Do Immediately
**1. Remove it Properly**
* Use fine-tipped tweezers.
* Grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible.
* Pull upward with **steady, even pressure**. Do not twist or jerk it, as this can cause the mouthparts to break off in the skin.
* **Skip the Myths:** Do *not* use petroleum jelly, nail polish, or a hot match. These methods can cause the tick to regurgitate fluids back into the bite, increasing the risk of infection.
**2. Clean and Disinfect**
* Thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.
**3. Save the Tick**
* Place the tick in a sealed plastic baggie and write the date on it. If you or your pet show symptoms later, your doctor or veterinarian can identify and test the tick directly.
# # # 🛡️ Prevention is the Best Medicine
* **The 10-Minute Habit:** Make a thorough tick check a mandatory routine the second you and your pets walk through the door.
* **Stay Protected:** Ensure your pets are on a vet-approved, year-round tick preventative.
* **Gear Up:** Wear long pants and sleeves when walking in tall brush, fields, or wooded areas.
