Most of you know that I have Cerebral Palsy and if you know me, but don't know this fact, there it is... This is why I walk the way I do. It's because I had the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck when I was being born and the lack of oxygen at birth caused some damage and this is the result. It does not get worse with time except for the fact that, with aging, everything gets harder for everyone ...Recently, a friend brought it to my attention that maybe I should talk about this fact more.... it's not easy to have this condition... and through the earlier part of my life I think I made a huge effort to ignore the fact that I do have a disability and tried to do most everything everyone else did. There are pros and cons to that approach but I do feel that it's made me who I am; a person who can overcome obstacles, (not all but many😂) who has a lot of compassion for others, and who is strong and determined...
I'm proud of the fact that I could've labeled myself disabled and let that define my life choices. Instead I feel blessed that I've been able to work and serve and care for people and my home and myself...
On the flip side, it's been hard to finally accept that I do have limitations and there are many things I should not be attempting to do, especially as I get older ....
I've always been very open when people ask me about it and I'm happy to share my challenges and experiences. I would like to encourage anyone out there that may also struggle with a disability!!
