I’m familiar with flour sack calico from stories my sissies have related, but this is a new take on green housekeeping from the Victorian era.

What does sugar and clothing dye have in common? Find out on this month’s as we explore an interesting use for sugarloaf wrapping paper.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries refined sugar was sold in a conical “loaf” known as sugarloaf. The sugarloaf was typically wrapped in blue or purple paper before being shipped to retailers. There is some evidence to suggest that thrifty Victorian-era women would recycle the scraps of paper to dye small amounts of wool or other fabrics.

One of the first published records of this nineteenth century life hack comes from Lydia Maria Child’s American Frugal Housewife which was published in 1835. According to Child, “The purple paper, which comes on loaf sugar, boiled in cider, or vinegar, with a small bit of alum, makes a fine purple slate color.”
