So may towns and cities could do versions of these ideas!

World Business Chicago has picked two winners in its search for the city’s next big idea: a network of neighborhood mini-arboreta and a plan to turn the city’s boulevards into climate-resilient public green spaces.

The two concepts were among almost 200 entries in the Horizon Lines design competition launched in March as part of the organization’s Chicago 2050 economic development roadmap, which aims to grow the region’s economy by attracting outside capital for both developments and companies.

World Business Chicago will work with the two teams along with public and private entities to explore how the ideas could work together and identify potential next steps.

One of the winning ideas, called “Green City Rising,” is from the Morton Arboretum and would create neighborhood botanical gardens made up of trees and plants suited to each area’s ecological needs and identities to help reduce temperatures, improve air quality, manage stormwater and increase biodiversity.

The other winning design, dubbed “Wonderways,” reimagines boulevard roadways as green spaces with expanded tree canopies and trails. It comes from Columbus, Ohio-based landscape architecture, urban design and planning firm MKSK.
