This magnificent brownstone building was once located on the corner of North Washington Street and West Railroad Street. Built in 1894, the structure originally housed the local power plant. This circa 1920 photo shows the building after its transition to The Detachable Heel & Rubber Co. The name would soon change to the Sure Foot Heel & Rubber Co. and later Victor Rubber Corporation. The structure was razed in 1965.

Gettysburg is still open during the government shut down!

GETTYSBURG REMAINS OPEN, even with the government shut down! Gettysburg National Military Park is different from other national parks-
🍁First, the 6,000 acres of battlefields, which surround the Borough of Gettysburg, have always been open and free, as dozens of local roads intersect the park avenues.
🍁Second, the National Military Park Museum and Visitors Center is not owned by the government's Park Service. It is privately owned by the Gettysburg Foundation which operates the facility, so it will remain open.
🍁The Association of Gettysburg Battlefield Guides, which operates out of the Visitors Center, is also a separate entity so they will continue to offer private tours detailing the famous Battle of Gettysburg, (https://gettysburgtourguides.org).
🍁All the independent tours, museums, shops, hotels and restaurants will serve guests as they always do. Only the Park Service ranger programs and Eisenhower Home tour (grounds are still accessible) will not operate. So, the most popular battlefield areas and attractions remain open!
