Spot the pattern? 🧐
If you look closely at the exterior siding in this photo, you can clearly see the vertical lines of the wall framing showing through. This isn’t just a cosmetic quirk—it’s a textbook visual of thermal bridging in action!
What’s happening here?
Standard wood or steel studs act as thermal “superhighways”. Even if your wall cavities are packed with insulation, framing members conduct heat much faster than insulation does. This creates temperature differentials across the wall, which leads to energy loss, uncomfortable hot/cold spots, and sometimes even moisture condensation or “ghosting” patterns on the exterior surface.
The Solution: Exterior Continuous Insulation (c.i.)
To stop thermal bridging, you need to break the thermal connection between the inside and the outside. By wrapping the exterior of the framing with a continuous layer of rigid insulation:
You create an unbroken thermal blanket that covers the studs entirely.
You drastically boost the effective R-value of your wall assembly, keeping energy bills lower.
You protect the building envelope by reducing condensation risks inside the wall cavity.
