💣 Bomb advice incoming.
As a real estate agent, there’s nothing better than seeing a couple take the step into homeownership as a team.
But let’s be honest…
Buying a home with another person has its challenges, and most of them start with miscommunication. 😞
Before you start searching for your new home, go through these 10 questions with your partner so you’re on the same page:
1. Do you see this being our forever home or starter home?
2. What are your must-haves and nice-to-haves when it comes to a home?
3. Are you open to working on the home? If so, to what extent?
4. Is our income likely to increase, decrease, or stay the same over the next 5-10 years?
5. How involved will our parents be in this process (financially or otherwise)?
6. How will our lives change over the next 5-10 years, and how might that change what we need from our house?
7. Can we still make our mortgage payment if one of us unexpectedly loses our job?
8. How much of our monthly pay are we comfortable with spending on a mortgage payment?
9. How much outdoor space do we want, and how will we maintain it?
10. What’s the ideal timeline for buying a home?
If you’re not married, here are two bonus questions you’ll want to get clear on before you start looking:
1. What will happen with the house if we break up?
2. Do we want to have an attorney create a legal agreement, or are we comfortable with a verbal agreement?
While these questions are kinda serious, it’s best to get them aired out before you’re in the middle of a heated negotiation or after you get the keys. 😅
Send this post to your homebuying partner so you can schedule a coffee date and get these questions answered!
