Older homes are great for their unique character and craftsmanship. But they come with their fair share of issues. Here are a few things to look out for when shopping for an older home.
1. Structural Integrity
Pay attention to sagging floors, cracks in the walls or foundation and any noticeable shifts in the structure.
2. Plumbing and Electrical Systems
Look for corroded pipes and outdated wirings. Electrical issues can cause fires while plumbing problems could damage the structure of the home itself.
3. Lead Paint, Pipes and Asbestos
Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint, which can pose health risks. Similarly, asbestos — commonly used in insulation — can be found in older homes and is a known health hazard.
