Southern and Western Trees

There is real, tangible value in warmer Summer climates to place deciduous trees - the kind that lose their leaves in the Winter - on the Western and/or Southern side of a home where the afternoon sunlight can heat up a property rather notably.

The shade these trees provide during the summer can reduce indoor temperatures rather impressively - up to 6 degrees - and then in the winter when the leaves have fallen, they allow sunlight through to heat the property. Carefully positioned trees can reduce a household's energy consumption for heating and cooling by up to 25%. Computer models devised by the U.S. Department of Energy predict that the proper placement of only three trees can save an average household between $100 and $250 in energy costs annually. Some species of Oaks, Catalpa, Linden, Elm, Ash and London Planetrees are good options that are also drought tolerant.

As the world's demand for more electrical energy will continue to rise and governments are notoriously slow planning infrastructure enhancements, reducing energy or creating it yourself may be a good insurance mechanism against blackouts.
