Apparently my avocados went to private school. 😂🥑

These are Hass avocados growing right in my backyard home orchard. There’s something ridiculously satisfying about walking outside and finding ingredients for avocado toast hanging from a tree.

This is exactly why I love edible landscaping—your backyard can be beautiful and become your own little gourmet grocery store.

Grow the groceries you love. 🌱🥑

You DON’T have to choose between a beautiful front yard and growing your own food. 🌿🍋

I believe an edible landscape should still feel intentionally designed.

When I look at a front yard, I see more than plants—I see circulation, sunlight, views, scale, mature plant sizes and opportunities.

So I’m starting a new series breaking down 7 things I would consider when designing an edible front yard from scratch.

Some plants can feed you.
Some can attract pollinators.
Some can provide shade.
And the best ones can do several jobs at once.

The goal? A front yard that looks professionally landscaped—but actually feeds you.

Save this series if you’re dreaming about replacing some traditional landscaping with something beautiful AND productive. 🌿

One Plant Can Help Your Entire Garden 🐝🌸

Want to make your edible garden better? Don’t just think about vegetables.

Think about the pollinators. 🐝🦋

Plant one flower that provides food for bees and butterflies and start building a more pollinator-friendly garden.

You don’t need to redesign your entire yard.

Start with one plant. 🌱

And that’s the final lesson in my START WITH ONE series:

🌳 One fruit tree
🌿 One herb pot
🥬 One salad container
🌸 One pollinator plant

A productive garden doesn’t have to happen overnight. Just start with one.

🌱 STOP using valuable garden space to grow food that’s already cheap at the grocery store.

If you’re gardening in a small space, every square foot matters.

I prioritize crops that are expensive to buy, produce for a long time, grow vertically, or taste dramatically better straight from the garden. 🍅🌶️🍓

Think cherry tomatoes, fresh herbs, peppers, strawberries, lettuce, green onions and climbing vegetables.

The goal isn’t to grow EVERYTHING you eat.

It’s to make every square foot of your garden work harder. 🌱

Follow for more small-space garden design and edible landscaping ideas.

If you grow fruit trees, you already know the struggle. 😂🐿️

I grow figs in my backyard orchard, but apparently the squirrels have decided they’re growing figs too — and somehow they always seem to know when the fruit is ripe before I do.

Growing a fig tree at home can be incredibly rewarding, especially when you finally get to harvest a perfectly ripe fresh fig… assuming the squirrels don’t get there first!

This is the reality of backyard gardening, growing fruit trees, edible gardening, and growing your own food. Sometimes you plant it, water it, prune it and patiently wait for the harvest…

…and the squirrels consider that excellent customer service. 😂

🐿️ Gardeners: what fruit do the squirrels steal from YOU? Tell me in the comments.

Follow along for more home orchard, edible landscaping, fruit tree, garden design, and grow-your-own-food tips.

Mistakes are a lot cheaper on paper. ✏️

Move the wall before it’s framed.
Move the fruit tree before it’s planted. 🌳

Good design isn’t about predicting everything perfectly. It’s about thinking through circulation, sunlight, mature plant size, furniture, storage, irrigation and views before you’ve spent the money building it.

That’s true whether I’m looking at a house or a garden.

Design first. Build—or plant—second. 🏡🌿

Save this before your next remodel or garden project.

Before planting a fruit tree, ask:

What job should it do? 🌳
A strategically placed fruit tree can:
Create shade, frame a view, screen the street AND grow food. That’s the power of edible landscaping. 🍋

Your Backyard Could Be Growing Your Groceries

Imagine walking outside and picking lemons, oranges, peaches, figs, avocados, herbs and vegetables. 🍋🍊🍑🥑

Growing food at home isn’t just about gardening. It’s about turning part of your landscape into something beautiful AND productive.

Fresh food.
Right outside your door.
And you know exactly how it was grown. 🌿

That’s one of the reasons I love designing home orchards and edible landscapes.

Would you rather have a traditional backyard—or one that feeds you?

Plant the Fruit Tree. You’ll Be Glad You Did. 🌳

The fruit tree you plant today could be feeding you for years. 🍋🍑🥑

Fruit trees need time to grow—and every season you wait delays a future harvest.

You don’t need to create an entire orchard at once. Start with one tree.

A few years from now, you may be walking into your backyard and harvesting fruit from the tree you almost didn’t plant today.

The best time to plant was years ago. The second best time is today. 🌳
