Apparently, we used to understand the importance of a good nook. ☕️

This floor plan from a 1955 New Homes Guide includes a dedicated breakfast nook right off the kitchen, and I have to say… we do not have enough nooks anymore.

Not a formal dining room. Not an oversized kitchen island. Just a small, intentional place to sit for breakfast, have coffee, read, or look out into the yard.

There’s a lot I love about mid-century residential design, but these little spaces designed around everyday life might be some of my favorite details.

Bring back the breakfast nook. 🏡

Okay, let’s talk laundry placement 🧺

Every home handles it a little differently. I’ve seen everything from full laundry rooms with sinks and storage to hallway closets, garages, kitchens and even setups outside.

This home tucked a stackable washer and dryer right into the kitchen and completely hid it behind the cabinetry. I actually think it’s a creative use of the space, and it got me thinking about how differently laundry can fit into a home.

There’s something about a home that feels like it belongs exactly where it was built. 🌿

Designed by Alistair Knox in 1970, the Carson House sits in Warrandyte, outside Melbourne, Australia, near Warrandyte State Park.

Knox was known for designing homes around their natural surroundings, often using materials like timber, brick and stone. Here, walls of glass, warm wood, exposed brick and expansive rooflines create a home that feels connected to the landscape rather than separate from it.

More than 50 years later, it still feels warm, interesting and incredibly livable. Proof that thoughtful design doesn’t need to be trendy to age well.
