This attic is a good example of what happens when the rafters isn’t properly braced. The rafters were partially supported by a strongback, but over time the lack of vertical bracing allowed them to sag, and the strongback sagged right along with them. From outside, it’s not directly noticeable, but inside, you can see the curve plain as day. Correcting something like this usually means carefully jacking up the rafters and installing proper bracing to transfer the load, but after twenty years of settling, it may not be as easy as it sounds. Fortunately, fixing rafter scoliosis is somebody else’s problem now.
