Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for many things, but did you KNOW THIS?
Dr. King did not just fight for voting rights and equality. He directly fought against housing discrimination and unethical real estate practices.
In the 1960s, Dr. King led the Chicago Freedom Movement, where he exposed how Black families were being denied access to homes purely because of race. He personally documented how real estate offices told Black buyers there were “no homes available,” while minutes later offering listings to White buyers at the same offices.
His leadership and national pressure from these housing campaigns helped lead to the passage of the
Fair Housing Act of 1968,
which made it illegal to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing.
That law still governs how real estate is practiced today.
Fair housing is not just policy. It is part of our profession’s history.
