At the June 15 workshop, Grand Junction City Council discussed a potential future walking and biking connection along 9th Street.
The concept was presented as an alternative to improvements previously studied on 7th Street. Unlike major north-south corridors, 9th Street carries lower traffic volumes and is interrupted by Washington Park, which separates the north and south sections of the roadway. Under the concept presented, people walking and biking would travel through the park to continue between the two sections of 9th Street.
The concept would improve connections between Colorado Mesa University, downtown, neighborhoods, parks, and the riverfront trail system while minimizing impacts to drivers on higher-traffic streets.
No decisions were made, and the project remains in the early planning stages. If the concept moves forward, the earliest phase would not begin until 2027 and would be coordinated with planned improvements near CMU. Additional improvements would require future design work, funding, public outreach, and City Council consideration.
