Ski season is about five weeks out. ❄️ Powderhorn, on the rim of Grand Mesa, is tentatively targeting a Friday, November 20 opening for its 60th winter, with a birthday party set for December 5.

Main Street is closing for candy. 🎃

The Downtown Spooktacular takes over Main Street in downtown Grand Junction on Saturday, October 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. — trick-or-treating at downtown businesses, plus activities and performances for kids. Weekend downtown parking is free, but give yourself extra time with the street closed.

Prefer a weeknight? Trunk or Treat Riverside Market at The Eddy is Monday, October 19, 4 to 8 p.m.

Rainy-day plans, sorted. 🦕

On Thursday, October 15, the Museum of the West in Grand Junction hosts An Evening with Local Authors, 6 to 8 p.m. Out in Fruita, Dinosaur Journey has 15,000+ fossil specimens, a working paleo lab, and monthly programs including a Sensory Hour on October 10 and a free Story Time on October 15.

Where do Grand Junction locals go when they want the river, the art, and a little fall color in one outing? 🍂

The Colorado Riverfront Trail runs about 28 paved miles from downtown to Loma, and Las Colonias Park is an easy place to start. Sculptures, murals, and bird-watching are all along the way, and the Botanical Gardens next door hosts Harvest Illuminated October 22-24.

Two Sundays left to catch the Palisade Farmer's Market this season! 🍎

Runs through October 4th, 9am-1pm on Main Street — apples, pears, and the last of the season's produce, plus honey, baked goods, and local crafts.

Fall might be the best time to go: orchards are deep into harvest and the w**e crowd hasn't fully cleared out from Winefest. It's a fifteen-minute drive from Grand Junction and a great reminder of what's actually nearby when you live here.

Grand Junction's Avalon Theatre is named after an apple. 🍎

When it opened on Main Street in 1923, a naming contest picked "Avalon" — from the Welsh word for apple, back when the Grand Valley was apple country. More than a century later, it's home to the 82nd season of Community Concerts of the Grand Valley, with "Jazz That Rocks" on September 30 and "Vinyl to Vocal" on October 29.

Did you know the mountain east of town is the largest flat-top mountain in the world? 🏔️ Grand Mesa's fall color is running about a week early this year thanks to drought — so if you've been meaning to make the drive, this is the week. Peak color is expected to hold through Powderhorn's Color Weekend, Sept 26-27, with chairlift rides, hiking, and biking up top. The tabletop shape comes from a 9-10 million-year-old lava cap that outlasted the softer rock around it — one of the wilder geology stories in our own backyard. Living here means this view isn't a vacation, it's a Tuesday.
