Ten years ago, there’s a chance you weren’t familiar with pickleball yet. Today, you’ve certainly heard of it, and even if you haven’t picked up your own paddle yet, you likely have a friend or two who plays. Pickleball has been named the fastest-growing sport in both America and Canada, and it’s been growing in the Northern Wilds, too. From Duluth to Thunder Bay, you can find pickleball organizations across the North Shore. So why are so many people being drawn to pickleball? And for the pickleball-curious, how does one get started?

We are so happy to report that as of noon today (Tuesday, 5/19/26), the Stewart Trail Fire is 100% contained, all evacuation zones are gone, and Hwy 61 is open!
Thank you to everyone for the concern and care you have shown over the last four days.

The fire never reached further than Silver Cliff Tunnel. It spanned from Cty Hwy 3 to the tunnel to 355 acres. 8 homes were destroyed along with 28 out buildings. When there is a centralized spot for donations, I will share that information.

Wild turkey hunters tend to stick to certain tried-and-true setups and let patience do the rest. This can work wonders, but there are also times you need to flip over the menu and be flexible. Big toms don’t get long beards and long spurs by making mistakes. They will do the unexpected, and a hunter needs to be ready. Here are a few of my experiences and techniques to help you punch that turkey tag this spring.

When the Centennial Conservatory opened in 1967, it marked Fort William, Ontario’s contribution to Canada’s centennial celebrations—a bright, glass-walled space where northern residents could experience tropical plants that many had only ever seen in books. For visitors in the late 1960s, the conservatory’s palms, hibiscus, and cacti would have felt genuinely exotic, a vivid contrast to the boreal landscape outside.

Spring in northern Minnesota doesn’t arrive all at once. The transitional season can sometimes take months, as winter lingers just a little longer than most would like.

On sunny days with temperatures in the 40s, motivation kicks into gear, and the long-awaited spring projects get underway. A few days later, a snowstorm can blanket the region, sending mud boots back to the closet and bringing winter gear back out.

By May, the waterfalls along the North Shore are on full display, with melting snow and spring rains cascading over towering cliff edges.
