John Ball Zoo is closely vetting a contaminated former landfill site along the Grand River for the development of a large-scale aquarium, Crain’s Grand Rapids Business has learned.

The target Kent County property is part of the Fenske Landfill, a federally designated contamination site, which adds a layer of complexity to any prospective property deal, according to documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

John Ball Zoo is working through a due diligence period and holds an option agreement to purchase the land in the city of Walker totaling 191 acres at 2550, 2552, 2646, 2648, 2650 and 2652 Kenowa Ave. SW, including frontage along the Grand River. The parcels are located across Wilson Avenue from Johnson Park on the western edge of Kent County.
