The overwhelming majority of these imports arrive from the Americas. Canada supplies over 50% to 60% of total U.S. oil imports, followed by Mexico at roughly 6-11%.
Other major suppliers include Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Brazil.Why import if the U.S. produces so much? U.S. refineries are primarily built to process heavy, sour crude oils, whereas the bulk of U.S. shale production yields light, sweet crude. Consequently, the U.S. continues to trade globally, buying certain crudes while exporting its own light crude and refined petroleum products.
