An anchor in the heart of Grand Rapids for more than a century, McKay Tower offers something for everyone, including office, retail, residential, and event space. A Grand Rapids icon for more than a century, we exist for one purpose — to give you meaningful opportunities to grow and thrive at the center of it all. With offerings from retail to office and residential to event space, we honor our ri
ch Tribal history with a laser-sharp focus on the future, lighting up the sky, and leading the way for generations to come. It rests on historic Grand River Bands of Ottawa tribal lands. The first framed house in Grand Rapids was built on the site in 1833. It was soon replaced by several small, framed buildings which gave way to an elegant bank neighbored by the Wonderly Building. Those were demolished in 1914 to give way to the new, 4-story Grand Rapids National City Bank modeled after the Chicago banks of the era. In 1925-1926, 14 stories were added to the renamed Grand Rapids National Bank (GRNB) to create the largest building between Chicago and Detroit; a record that would hold until the completion of the Amway Grand in 1983. In 1930, the GRNB added a magnificent advertising dome/aerial beacon 220 feet above the street, making what was perhaps the largest neon-lighted beacon in the United States at the time. In 1942, a few years after the GRNB failed because of the Great Depression, a well-known businessman and State of Michigan Treasurer named Frank McKay purchased the GRNB building and renamed it McKay Tower. This elegant and iconic tower has passed through several hands since that date; however, on Jan. 15, 2020, the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (a.k.a., the Gun Lake Tribe) and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (NHBP) purchased McKay Tower. The acquisition represents a rare co-investment by the non-gaming economic development entities of two Michigan Native American tribes (Gun Lake Investments and Waséyabek Development Company, respectively). McKay Tower is located at the intersection of Monroe Avenue, Monroe Center Street, and Pearl Street. It is in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids with spectacular views of the city as well as close proximity to all downtown attractions, restaurants, museums and shops. It is a multi-use office, retail and residential building. If interested in leasing, contact Lauri Miller at (616) 808-3777.
