Stay safe, Grand Rapids! With temperatures in Grand Rapids expected to plummet to a low of -14°F tomorrow, Friday, January 23, it’s time to prep your home against frozen pipes.
I want to make sure your home stays warm and dry. Here is a quick guide to protecting your plumbing:
❄️ How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Let it Drip: Allow a small, steady trickle of water (about the size of a pencil lead) to run from faucets, especially those on exterior walls. Moving water is much harder to freeze!
Open Cabinet Doors: Keep kitchen and bathroom vanity doors open to allow the home’s warm air to circulate around the pipes.
Check the Thermostat: Keep your heat at a consistent temperature day and night. If you’re heading out of town, never set it lower than 55°F.
Seal the Drafts: Close garage doors and crawl space vents. Check for air leaks near pipes in the basement or attic and plug them with insulation or even a towel in a pinch.
🆘 What to Do if You Suspect a Frozen Pipe
If you turn on the tap and only a trickle comes out (or nothing at all), your pipes may be frozen.
Keep the Faucet Open: As the ice melts, water needs a place to go.
Apply Gentle Heat: Use a hair dryer, an electric heating pad, or a space heater (kept at a safe distance). NEVER use an open flame or torch.
Know Your Shut-Off: If a pipe has already burst, turn off the main water valve immediately to prevent flooding.
Call a Pro: If you can’t locate the freeze or the pipe has burst, contact a licensed plumber right away.
Stay warm, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions about winterizing your home!
